History

Like Line 1, it comes from the trenet: in the north, the line from Pont de Fusta to Llíria; in the south, the one from Jesús to Torrent. The Bétera and Llíria branches shared the approach to Pont de Fusta until 1988, when the through tunnel between Empalme and Sant Isidre changed the shape of the network. It was then decided to run them separately, and the Llíria branch was given the number 2 and the colour green. In 1998, when Line 3 was extended to Avinguda del Cid, the two were merged again and the number 2 vanished from the map.

It came back in March 2015, as part of the reorganisation announced in November 2014 — this time in pink, because green was already Line 5’s colour. The floods of 30 October 2024 knocked out the whole line. The section from Paterna to Plaça Espanya reopened on 3 December; on 24 December service resumed between Plaça Espanya and Llíria, and at the same time a doubled track through the Fuente del Jarro industrial estate and a new halt, Font del Barranc, opened. On 18 February 2025 the section to València Sud returned, and on 27 June 2025 the worst-hit stretch reopened, between València Sud, Paiporta and Torrent Avinguda.

The service

The timetable lists 1,065 runs, but the service is heavily staggered: 450 turn back at PaternaES, which effectively acts as the terminus for half the route, and another 124 at València Sud. So the central section and the Paterna stretch get most of the trains, while far fewer go on to Llíria. In the morning rush hour there are about 4.5 trains an hour in each direction at Àngel Guimerà, dropping to about three on Saturdays and Sundays. On Friday and Saturday nights the service runs on into the early hours, and on Sundays it starts later and finishes earlier than on other days. Eight of its stations have a park-and-ride car park.

The trains

Adding up the scheduled times between stations, an end-to-end trip takes about 71 minutes. The city half is a classic metro, in tunnel with stations close together; from Paterna northwards the line works more like a commuter railway, with stations further apart, park-and-ride car parks at eight of them, and single-track sections that have only recently begun to be doubled, as in the Fuente del Jarro industrial estate.

Frequently asked questions

Between 1988 and 1998 the Llíria branch was run separately as number 2, in green. It was later merged back into Line 1 and the number fell out of use. In March 2015 the network was reorganised and Line 2 was revived, this time in pink, as green was already taken by Line 5.

It is the line’s newest halt. It opened on 24 December 2024, at the same time as the doubled track through the Fuente del Jarro industrial estate in Paterna, while service was being restored after that autumn’s floods.

Eight months in all. The whole line was suspended on 30 October 2024; Paterna – Plaça Espanya came back on 3 December, Plaça Espanya – Llíria on 24 December, the section to València Sud on 18 February 2025 and, last of all, València Sud to Torrent Avinguda via Paiporta on 27 June 2025.

It has 34, from Torrent Avinguda to Llíria, and 15 of them are interchanges with another line. FGV’s table of figures gives 33 for this line; we publish the operator’s own list of stations, which is the one that matches its official timetable.
It is a metro line. FGV says so on its own page of figures: of the ten Metrovalencia lines, six are metro (L1, L2, L3, L5, L7 and L9) and four are tram (L4, L6, L8 and L10). They share fares, the map and interchange stations, so for travelling it makes no difference; what changes is the vehicle and, on the tram, the fact that the route runs at street level.
From Monday to Thursday, between 05:00 and 00:19. On Saturday it runs from 05:10 to 03:12 and on Sunday from 06:23 to 00:21: on Friday and Saturday service carries on into the early hours. These are the earliest and latest times at any station on the line; each station page gives its own.
FGV publishes 39.445 km.
